The probe contains two magnetometer flux gates that sense the earth's magnetic field. The extension handle provides a separation between the diver and the probe. This separation minimizes interference in the earth's magnetic field sensed by the probe from the divers' tanks and gear.

A row of 11 LEDs on the electronics housing (Figure 2-18) displays the output of the system. An earphone provides variable frequency audible signal. The center LED shows that power is on. The five LEDs on either side of the power indicator light progressively, either left or right, according to the magnetic signal strength and polarity.

Detection range and display readings will vary depending on the size, shape, and proximity of the ferrous object and interference from nearby ferrous material. Thus, there are a few different signal characteristics which might be displayed as the probe passes over a ferrous object:

• Detection may occur with the signal increasing to a maximum level and then decreasing.

• The signal may increase to a maximum level and then reverse polarity.

• The signal may increase to a maximum level and then reverse polarity twice.
