Along South Africa's "Wild Coast," mil lions of sardines attract the ocean's top predators, and more than a few photographers.

O it's the ultimate photo op, a teeming mass of shimmering African pilchards—sardines—that can form a cohesive unit miles long. Finom all sides, ihe pnsdators—copper sharks, whales, ports of dolphins, seals, sea hints and game fish—home in on the shoal, corralling it into a swirling bait ball for the kind of manic feeding frenzy you can only see in Africa. And il happens every year, during the southern hemisphere's autumn months of June and July, offshore (lie South African provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. "The sardine run excites underwater photographers in the same way that lottery players get worked up when the jock pot goes into the lens of millions of dollars," says veteran photographer Doug Pcrrinc, "We wan: a picture that will connect people visccraliy back to th«l roots, when the whole planet was a wilderness, and communing with nature was a life-or-death struggle. The chance of that winning shot is minuscule, but the payoff is so big if you do win that you're willing to risk it all." That's because experiencing this awesome event requites lots of time, planning and money. Operators use small, fast boats, and spotter planes take off early in the morning to scope out the shoal and relay the position to the anxious divers. "The reality of the sardine run is something like how anglers describe big-game fishing/' P&rrine says, "Houre or days of interminable boredom punctuated by brief moments of total panic and pandemoni urn. it's not easy, it's noi fair, and it's probably not whal most people are expecting, but at any moment a bolt of magic can strikeout of the blue."
